Opossums are common here in north Texas, and they thrive in suburban
areas. There is some undeveloped land across the street from my house, and
a greenbelt along a small stream nearby, all of which apparently makes a
good environment for local possums. An added advantage which they have
discovered is the catfood feeder I placed in my garage for the local strays.
The possums usually show up in the garage in the late summer and autumn,
presumably fattening up on catfood for the winter. I don't see much of them
the rest of the year. They're nocturnal, so I usually surprise them when I
go out into the garage late at night or very early in the morning. Juvenile
possums will usually run and hide when I open the door; adults often won't
even stop eating. They back off and snarl if I approach, but they don't like
to leave that catfood. They also drink from the water dish I keep out there
for the cats; I can always tell when the possums have been by, because they
drink large amounts of water and are very sloppy, leaving lots of catfood
crumbs in the bowl.
